I slept and dreamt that life was joy, I awoke and saw that life was service, I acted and behold, service was joy.

However, there is subtle difference between serving people and becoming their servant. When we serve others our focus is on the being, but when we become someone’s servant, we become a human doing and end up nerving people.

So how can we serve as Human Beings without becoming Human Doings?

Let me share this very special story of my late friend Jijoo Motivala.

My family has had the good fortune of knowing Roshan and Jijoo Motivala for the past 16 years.

For those of you who do not happen to know, the Motivala family has been a blessing to the Zarthushti Community in Southern California for the past 25 plus years.

Aside from their relentless service to our community, Jijoo had a passion for feeding the homeless.

Every Sunday, rain or shine, Jijoo and his family would prepare 300 Sandwiches for the homeless with a lot of love and compassion.

They would serve those sandwiches with hot soup in Down Town and South Central Los Angeles Area, where a lot of gang related activities take place.

One evening, Jijoo was in that same area trying to take care of some other business.

He parked his car far away and walked to the meeting place.

By the time the meeting was over, it was quite dark and scary.

Jijoo started walking towards his car.

Halfway down the path Jijoo heard some footsteps.

Jijoo turned around and he saw a Huge African American man following him.

Jijoo got scared and started to walk faster.

The person following Jijoo also increased his pace.

Jijoo started walking even faster.

Then suddenly Jijoo heard a voice saying:

"Sir, I am not here to hurt YOU. I am one of those who YOU have been feeding sandwiches and hot soup for years, and I am walking behind YOU to make sure that nobody messes with YOU."
